The Original Version of the Altered Portraits

CT101, the YORK College Cross Course Collab Part II

This fall semester the students at CUNY York College collaborated on the annual GIF the Portrait project.

CT101 is a digital storytelling course that fosters the understanding and application of digital tools while creating a digital identity on the Internet at large!

We knew the project would be a fine fit for the NET-Art open call for submissions via the CUNY academic commons.

This project will be live on the NET-ART website as of 12/12/18

CT101 has two sections this fall semester. Whilst learning some new blogging skills each student was asked to write an individual post about someone who inspires and motivates them. They were asked to share why and add contextual links for further clarification. (these can be found on the ct101 website) Using the portrait of that person selected we learned basic electronic image manipulation skills with adobe photoshop. Students also made some basic sequential motion graphics with those manipulated images. Then, they were asked to extract one single still-frame from their individual animations to contribute to the animations above. The result is a fast moving collaborative sequence of portraits. The portraits quickly morph and fragment into a series of animated iterations. Does the word ENERGy come to mind? We hope so (along with a little glitch aesthetic, we hope for that too). After the first animated collab was published, we began pushing the piece further by “examining the potentials of what else may happen?”

Students are now working on screen grabbing the consolidated GIFs and pushing them forward into “various otherness” using the mobile apps below.

Would you like to remix one? What is stopping you?!!

Stay tuned!

New Website Who Dis?

Can I put ‘website developer’ in my Instagram Bio yet?

While I have my own website, I used Wix’s easy templates and let them do all the work. This time around, for my new website, www.thepoetrybookclub.net , I basically built everything from scratch and I would continue to keep it that way. I hope you all stayed tuned to what my website has to offer!

Nah, fr. Hire me. 😉

ZINE COLLAB in Print at the NYPL & More!

Dear CT101 Spring 2018 Students, (and Beyond!)

I hope that this message finds you all well! As the summer begins to winds down I wanted to alert you to a few things:

  1. First and foremost, our awesome class ZINE collaboration with my BMCC MMA100 Graphic Design students is now officially accessible in print and available at the NYPL at their 5th Avenue & 42nd Street location – DeWitt Wallace Periodical Room at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building . As a public space, all visitors to the NYPL can take out the zine for review. There are two copies reserved and forever archived. I will also be submitting 1 copy of the zine to the YORK College library on campus. I will let you know once it has been cataloged and is ready for viewing. You can also revisit, comment and contribute in reflection to the project by clicking on the graphic below.

PS – I would love to hear from you! Let me know what you are working on!

Good Energy!

Copyright and whatever!

In class we discussed Copyright and the fairuse act. In the TED conversation entitled “laws that choke creativity. Larry Lessig discussed the idea of copyright and how technology influences copyright. In the day and age we live in the internet, camera phones various social media apps makes copyright rules hard to apply. Once an image is up its very easy to screen shot something and make it your own or to remix it . So the question is where is that thin line. For example the harlemshake song that came out in 2013 was huge. The video link had clips from people but also using clips from the peanuts, the simpsons and even a news broadcast. Now the clips from the shows and news were not original for the harlemshake post however someone “remixed” them and added the music. Isnt that a part of copywriting?  But technically the actual harlem shake was a danced that originated in Harlem in the late 90’s early 2000. Where is the copyright for that?  I also found an interesting article on the Google books finally being Legal.  Google book provides free snippets of library books.

OK CT 101-Lets get into Formation! What made me happy this week!

King Bey!!!

I am actually happy I waited to do this post. The one and only Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter broke the internet Saturday when she released her song and video for Formation. Below is a Gif I made using imgur and a clip from her video.Pretty much my reaction once I saw the video

But Ms. Carter wasn’t finished there she went a performed the song at the half time show alongside Coldplay and Bruno Mars.

*sidenote* Milly Rock is a dance that was started in Brooklyn (Jay Z Beyonce’s husband is from Brooklyn*

But Wait Key Bey..Lets get this straight:

  1. You released a new song and video
  2. You performed it a superbowl and slayed but she wasn’t finished….what else could King Bey do..drum roll please
