Why Are Lyric Analysis Important?

As you all know my site is entitled LyricallyHigh and of course the reason for that name is because of my love for music. So what does lyrically high mean? Lyrically high is the feeling you get when you hear some really good lyrics and it brings you to a whole other world. It’s like you are living the story that the artists (whether it’d be rap, r&b, pop, rock, etc.) are telling. So in a sense you get this type of high.

With that being said I think Lyric Analysis are important because it helps the listener understand what certain lyrics mean, in hopes that they will be able to understand the whole song in general. One site I kind of “look up to” or try to mirror is Rap Genius, because they are able to help people really understand the meaning of these artist lyrics.

I actually did two rap lyric analysis on this site:

Kanye West “All Falls Down

Kendrick Lamar “Don’t Kill My Vibe Remix

This week’s digital storytelling project comes from DS 106 assignment bank. For this assignment I was asked to find a picture of a celebrity of my choice and find a quote about that celebrity that links the two together and makes sense. The quote I found is from a Biggie verse from the song Brooklyn’s Finest when he says “If Fay had twins she’d probably have two Pacs. Get it?… Tu Pac’s”. There was some notorious (no pun intended) “beef” between Tupac and Biggie at some point of time in their rap careers. In Tupac’s song Hit Em Up he makes a claim that he had a sexual encounter with Biggie’s wife, and in return was Biggie’s line in Brooklyn’s Finest. I think what Biggie was trying to make a joke to show that they he wasn’t affected by Tupac’s statement. This picture I choose is of Faith Evans and Tupac together. Although no one but them can be sure of what happened, the quote and picture goes together because this is the same picture that the tabloids used when these allegations first came to surface. Plus Faith Evans and Tupac look real cozy together in this picture.

Get it Tupac

Once again I was able to add text to this picture using the app Aviary. I love this app because it is easy to use and gets the job done in seconds. I think this assignment was a great idea, and I plan to use it to help inspire me for my event planning posts.

Here is the song Brooklyn Finest that featured Biggie, the lyrics I mention are from 3:13-3:18

“What’s One More Quote For Us?”

For this week’s digital storytelling project I used the visual assignments section of the DS 106 assignment bank and found an assignment entitled “My Favorite Lyric”. Teddy Bear Looking out of Window --- Image by © B.M.W./Corbis

For this week’s digital storytelling project I used the visual assignments section of the DS 106 assignment bank and found an assignment entitled “My Favorite Lyric”. For this assignment I had to take some lyrics from a song that made me “feel” something and make it visual. The song I decided to use was one of my favorite songs out right now by Drake entitled “0-100”. The lyrics I choose was “He aint show up, valuable lesson man I had to grow up”. In this song drake is referring to his father not showing up after he said he was coming to the house to get him. These lyrics make me feel something because I think everyone has been in a situation where someone said they would do something and you really counted on them but they didn’t do it and let you down. So I used this photo of this teddy bear sitting at the window looking sad for two reasons:

  • Because it shows the bear showing the disappointment one feels when they are let down
  • Because a teddy bear is usually associated with children and he has been left behind “man I had to grow up”

I was able to add text to this picture using the app Aviary. I love this app because it is easy to use and gets the job done in seconds. I think this assignment was a great idea, and I plan to use it to help inspire me for my event planning posts.

Here is 0-100 song by Drake, 2:08-2:14 is the part where the lyrics I mentioned are said.

Welcome to Lyrically High, a site where you can find all things music. My reasoning for choosing lyrically high as my domain name was because of my love for music and how it makes me feel. Music is very important to me and I want to be able to share that with all of you. When I listen to music it is able to effect and/or enhance my mood depending on the genre and situation. Songs such as Good Life by Kanye West, or 0-100 by Drake have this ability to put me in a state of mind that could be compared to the “high” one would get from a drug.

“It’s crazy cuz I treat this like a drug; call it musical abuse, cuz I’m lyrically high”

Khadija J. Anderson

Actually claiming my domain name was a bit tricky. The steps were very simple but I had a little problem with the site needing credit card information. I am VERY conscious of giving out my personal information in majority of the situations I encounter. However, I just used an old debit card that I don’t really use anymore to sign up. Installing the word press application was pretty straight forward, no complications there. I actually used the professor’s tutorial on how to do both the sign up and installation. It helped to answer any questions about things I was unsure of.

I will definitely be looking at some other related sites such as soundcould and whosampledwho however, I plan to personalize my site by just crafting it to my unique way of thinking. A lot of music or entertainment websites only give you the opportunity to listen to the song or just give you the lyrics, my site will be used to connect the two by answering questions like: What is the song actually about? What makes this song “work”?   Are there any samples in the song? What do these lyrics mean? My site will be more than just the typical music critiquing site.
