9/8 Week 1

  • Weekly Reflection 1 – Assess your skills with a variety of digital storytelling tools – Shooting, editing photos. Manipulating text and image in a layered fashion. Recording and editing audio (this could be music, voice, natural sound, found sound, remixed sound). Shooting and editing video. Creating animations (this includes creating GIFs from loops of found video). What tools have you used to do your work? Which ones are you most comfortable with and why? Which ones are you not and would like to learn to use better? In a blog post, answer these questions as well as embed a piece of media you’ve created and describe it. (Due: 9/9 11:59PM)
  • Weekly Reflection 2 – Develop a game plan for the course indicating which kinds of assignments you plan to complete. Give two examples of assignments and link to them. Why have you chosen the kinds of assignments you have? Why do you think we are giving the choice for kinds of assignments? At what pace do you plan to complete assignments? Have you considered that you may not receive the full point value for each assignment? In a blog post, answer these questions as well as embed a ‘Reaction GIF‘ that speaks to your confidence in your plan. Explain why you chose this GIF. (Due: 9/14 11:59PM)

9/15 Week 2

  • Weekly Reflection 3 – What Social Media networks do you engage in with an account? Facebook, Youtube, G+, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, Instagram, Vine, Reddit and others. How do you use these accounts differently? Which are public and which are private? How do make your choices and why? Read danah boyd’s ‘controlling your public appearance.’ Does it or does it not change your thinking about you use of social media? How? (Due: 9/16 11:59PM)
  • Weekly Reflection 4 – Why would a student or a faculty member like to have a “domain of one’s own?” Why do you think other people have their own domain name for professional/personal use? Listen to the interview on Tech Therapy with Jim Groom the educational technologist who coined the phrase “domain of one’s own,” and has been working with his university to have faculty and students use a web domain to help craft their digital identity? Respond to this idea of a ‘domain of one’s own’ by answering the first two questions above. Also, how will you choose your domain name? Will it be based on your name? A quote? An ethos? A theme? And how do I know if it’s available! Search for available domains and pick one and tell us why you wish to use it as your domain you wish to own. (Due: 9/21 11:59PM)
  • Digital Storytelling Project 1 – Create a Reaction GIF. Find an emotional and/or physical expression created by a person(s) in a piece of film, television, home video, etc. and use it to create a looped animation of that expression in a GIF. Tell us how a person might use this GIF as a substitute for how one feels in a particular ‘textual’ situation (text message exchange, social media exchange, etc). Include an example textual exchange that illustrates how to properly use your reaction GIF as an appropriate expression. Visit the Reaction GIF subreddit if you want to see a lot of fun examples. This post describes the basics for making your first GIF.

9/22 Week 3

  • Weekly Reflection 5 – It’s time to get a domain of your own and install WordPress to run your own site from that domain. We will be using ReclaimHosting.com, a web hosting company with whom we have a contract which provides you with a full year of web hosting and domain name registration. You will receive a coupon code in class today which will waive the $25 fee while registering. Once you have registered your domain and created an account with Reclaim Hosting, it’s time to access the cPanel and install WordPress. The linked documentation was created initially for UMW Domains, they use the same web hosting tools so just substitute Reclaim Hosting for UMW Domains. During this process you will be creating a number of usernames and passwords, you must keep track of them! When you’re done submit your domain name to this form. Edit your ‘Hello World’ blog post on your new site. This will be your first post from your site – give it a thoughtful title, describe to everyone how the installation process went, give us a sense of what you hope to do to personalize your site, describe how you chose your domain name and what it means.   • Weekly Reflection 6 – You’ve learned the basics of publishing blog posts on this site, now it’s time to learn some of the basics to customize your WordPress site. Follow the documentation on WordPress, starting with General Settings: Title and Tagline. Proceed through all the tutorials as they will guide you through the process of working with themes, plugins, custom menus, pages, and more. Create a new blog post on your site. Describe how you chose your theme – give us the name of it and a link to the theme. What customizations did you make and why. Describe the same for plugins. Do you have an about page for your site? What did you chose to include on your about page? If you do not have an about page tell us why not? (Due 9/28 11:59PM)

    Another Special Digital Storytelling Assignment – Believe it or not you are now a system administrator of a web site with a bona fide web hosting company – hello world I’m a sysadmin! Gardner Campbell wrote and spoke about the power individuals can discover when becoming a sysadmin in his essay A Personal Cyberinfrastructure and his talk No Digital Facelifts: Thinking the Unthinkable About Open Educational Experiences. They cover basically the same ground so you can choose one or the other or both! Choose a quote from one of the two that is meaningful to you and present it in a blog post. Tell us in words and a GIF (that you create) why this quote is meaningful to you.

9/29 Week 4

  • Weekly Reflection 7

    What is copyright? Why is there copyright? How much should users of the web think about copyright as you and others share, re-share, and remix content on the web? What is fair use? Think about these questions and watch Larry Lessig’s TEDTalk How creativity is being strangled by the law. In a blog post, find a quote from the talk that you find compelling and tell us why. Also respond to the questions posed above. (Due 9/30 11:59PM)

  • Weekly Reflection 8 – As a further reflection on “fairness” and fair use consider two cases that actually tangled with the legal system under copyright law. First, Andy Baio a software developer for Kickstarter writes and speaks about his experience being sued by a photographer and is forced to settle and pay thousands of dollars. This is despite the fact he believes the law is on his side and so does his pro-bono counsel the EFF.
    Second famous appropriation artist Richard Prince is sued by photographer Patrick Cariou for Prince’s use of Cariou’s photographs in a number of collages. At first the courts sided with Cariou the photographer, but then on the appeals court reversed the decision in favor of the Prince’s remixes being fair use.
    In a blog post, find a quote from both Andy Baio’s case and Richard Prince’s case that you agree with, disagree with, or both. Tell us why. Also tell us whether you think law around fair use is working. How would you change copyright law and fair use if you were in charge. (Due 10/5 11:59PM)
  • Digital Storytelling Prompt on Fair Use – Create an image, GIF, video, and/or piece of audio that reworks a quote and/or image found in any of the linked essays from reflection 7 & 8. Think about possibly creating a poster that uses an image and quote. Or create a video or audio remix that samples from the Andy Baio and/or Larry Lessig talks. Or maybe come up with something on your own that is inspired by these discussions. In your post, remember to use links to reference texts incorporated in your work as well as give context to the work.

  • Last Wednesday Ryan and MBS discussed your progress on your blogging, digital storytelling work, and your websites. We thought it was appropriate to consider how for many of you have progressed:

    If you are in MBS’s section you were asked to complete this progress check-in form to help get a sense of how you’re doing.We recognize that this class is an unusual one for most in that we don’t very specifically direct you to read, write, and test about various topics. We ask for a lot of self-directed work, which can be liberating but also confusing. In some ways doing exactly what you’re told to do (even if that sounds less fun) can be much harder than doing exactly what you want to do.In light of that we actually do have this Weekly Reflection 9 we would like all of you to complete for next week and consider the following: What has been the most interesting work you’ve done so far in the class and why? What has not? What else would inspire you to create work, reflect on it, and post? What makes this course difficult in compared to other traditional courses? What makes it easier if at all? Review your plan from week one, complete the progress check-in form if you have not already. Let us know where you think you are, and where you want to be. What is/will be your motivation? Will it be points? A desire to make work and share it? A combination? Tell us why?

10/27 Week 8

  • This week’s short reflection, Weekly Reflection 10 is going to be built from Ryan’s GIF the Portrait digital storytelling project. We’d like you to find a portrait of a person or character that is inspiring to you. You can use a portrait of a person you know from the past or present, an individual from popular culture, a contemporary or historical public figure, an artist/author, or even a fictional character. Find using Google’s image search or create a high resolution digital image of the portrait you’d like to present. In a blog post, embed the portrait and describe how this particular person or character is inspiring to you. Link to an article about this person or character (if none give some background) and pick out something from it in particular that speaks to you. Also describe how this person or character motivates you and why this particular portrait is important to you. (Due 10/28 11:59PM)
  • For a longer reflection, Weekly Reflection 11 we would like you to watch the portrait documentary of Aaron Swartz, The Internet’s Own Boy. Swartz was a prodigy web developer that participated in some seminal web projects – RSS, Creative Commons licensing, and Reddit. He founded Demand Progress which successfully campaigned against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) with a broadly adopted 24 hour internet blackout of well know sites like Wikipedia. Swartz was later arrested by M.I.T. police for systematically downloading thousands of academic articles from JSTOR and federal prosecuted with charges of wire fraud and 11 violations of the Computer Abuse and Fraud Act. Facing possible jail time, Swartz committed suicide at the age of 26.Larry Lessig who was a mentor, colleague, and friend to the much younger Swartz commemorated his life and work with Lessig’s appointment as Roy L. Furman Professor of Law and Leadership at Harvard Law School with a lecture titled “Aaron’s Laws: Law and Justice in a Digital Age.” In a blog post, find a moment in either the documentary about Swartz or the Lessig talk that you relate to as an important idea/moment in Swartz’s work as a programmer and/or activist. Tell us why you find it significant and find/make a visual artifact that represents your thinking as well and embed it in the post. (Due 11/2 11:59PM)

  • Special Digital Storytelling Assignment – On Monday 11/3 we are going to do a hands-on workshop with Ryan’s GIF the Portrait project. We will be working in the Makerspace next to the lab that day. Be sure to do the weekly reflection 10 described above in preparation.

11/10 Week 10

  • Weekly reflection 11 – This week you were given a handout to make a self-assessment of you site/blog. Please complete it if you did not make it to class on Monday. Please consider summarizing your responses in a reflective blog post. Also describe in your post which portions you feel good about, which ones do wish to work on, and which ones you did not even know about! Finally how about a reaction GIF in your post to let us know how you’re feeling. (Due by 11/16 11:59PM)
  • Weekly reflection 12 – The work you’re doing on a site in CT 101 came up for discussion recently in CT 399, the portfolio course for upper level majors. One senior in particular mentioned how he wished he knew about certain things back and CT 101 when he was first getting started. So we spent an afternoon discussing advice they might give to CT 101 students as they gett started in the major (other majors too as the advice still applies). Read their thoughts and respond to their advice in a reflective blog post on your own site. What do you find the most helpful? Least helpful? Which things do you already do? Which ones will you do that you did not previously? (Due by 11/16 11:59PM)
  • GIF the Portrait continued – Ryan and I have been really excited to see all the work posted on the blogs with your GIFs based on portrait/collage. Remember to email your GIF to Ryan (ryan [at] ryanseslow [dot] com) if you’d like to see it submitted to the GIF the Portrait Tumblr. Also on Monday we’re going to discuss ways of getting your GIFs in the wild, using projection, portable screens and the like. If you have some ideas and/or experiments that you like to describe in a post go for it!
  • And here’s Ryan and Michael’s Google Hangout if you missed it. Mariana Funes an open participant of our class has started a comment thread on the talk. Consider adding to that discussion and let us know you did in a blog post.

11/17 Week 11

  • Last week you were asked to consider responding to advice from CT 399 students about your work in this class. One of the prompts to consider under the “constructive procrastination” list was to think about bookmarking, tagging, and archiving as a creative productive act. I’d like you to view my post about collections as archives and my Diigo bookmark links tagged ‘archive.’ From these I have two reflection posts you can consider –––
  • Weekly reflection 13 – Find an archive from my set or one of you find on your own that is interesting to you. In a blog post embed an artifact from that artifact and describe why it and the archive is interesting to you. Do a little research on the artifact and give it some context. Find something you didn’t know about it and describe that as well.
  • Weekly reflection 14 – What public archiving habits might you develop? Are there social bookmarking tools like Diigo.com or Delicious.com you might like to try out? Or maybe another tool? Try to transfer your bookmarks on your computer and add tags, edit titles. Or consider taking a personal collection and putting up online as a public archive. It can be a simple Flickr photo album, a Tumblr aggregation of a particular interest, a Youtube set of likes for a particular purpose. Describe your experiments with public archiving in a blog post and share your work.
  • Digital Storytelling Prompt – Consider using an artifact from an archive and using it for a bit of remix! There’s a great DS106 assignment from a few years back that is still popular which asks you to rework the message of a propaganda poster into one for this class. I made one a few years back. But consider any of the techniques and tools previously used to make something from the archives.

11/24 Week 12

  • Weekly reflection 15 – Is their work you’ve made or a friend has made that you feel you shouldn’t put online because you’re afraid it will be stolen? Copied without your permission? What are you afraid someone else will do with you work? Consider Cory Doctorow’s Second Law – Fame Won’t Make You Rich, But You Can’t Get Paid Without It, from his new book “Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free: Laws for the Internet Age.” If you can’t get a copy of his book, then listen to his recent Keynote at DConstruct. Or read reviews at NPR or McSweeney’s quotes a few or find your own! Find a quote or thought from Doctorow’s 2nd Law and agree or disagree with it. Consider it in the context of your own work you or a friend is afraid to share online.
  • Digital Storytelling Prompt – Remember to send your GIFthePortrait GIF to Ryan Seslow via his email so it can be posted on the Tumblr. We’re going to have an event on Dec 11 and Dec 19 where we will be projecting GIFs from the site onto walls in the atrium. Yes a pop-up digital art show! But also consider finding ways to create your own GIFs in the real world. Take the phone and play that GIF fullscreen and then place it in a new context. Document it. Put it on your blog. Reflect on it.

  1. Hello! I went on the site to register and it’s still asking for card information even tho the coupon is provided. I’m confused and it’s due today. I don’t want to miss out ! 🙁

    1. Also you can create a free Paypal account and use that. You will not need to have money in the account to complete the order not having any outstanding balance. There is a chance the paypal account will need to be verified though. Not sure.

    1. Hi Brittany, We haven’t put up a new reflection assignment yet, but one will come soon. Remember though digital storytelling assignments are very much always in play. Visit as the syllabus suggests, the ds106 assignment repository find something interesting to make and submit it in a blog post! This is a big part of the course that is under your control and should be based on your desire and plan considered in the first week.
