CT 101 Fall 2017 Calendar

Week 1 – 8/29 & 8/31 –  Class Introductions & Full Course Overview. The WordPress interface, log-in, profile, navigation and publishing content!  My first GIF post and Making me happy post

Week 2 – 9/5 & 9/7 – Did you read Blog Like Flaca Would ? (if not, please do)! The WordPress interface, log-in, profile, navigation and publishing content!

1. Create a NEW blog post and embed a new Reaction GIF that speaks your feelings about our class and what the potentials are (yes, you can make more than 1!) 2. Then, dig into this assignment, its chock full of useful information – Flexibility in the kinds of Digital Storytelling projects you do.

Week 3 – 9/12 & 9/14 – Part 1. Lets share some of those NEW Blog posts that you have been posting! A peek into student work & blogging process – a class Q&A session.

Part 2 –  Animated Graffiti – Basics of PS selections and cloning

Week 4 – 9/18 & 9/26 – Thursday class meets 9/18  (no classes 9/20)-The  GIF the Portrait project <— Click the link to investigate and prepare for classroom awesomeness. Continued GIF making techniques with photoshop. Each student will contribute to the collaboration and publish a blog post about the process.

Week 5 – 9/26 & 9/28 1. The GIF the Portrait project continues, photoshop tutorials and the class submissions process. (Each student will submit their finished piece)

2. Want to create and host an open call or collaborative project on your blog, social media feed or online in general? Lets talk about how to do this through storytelling. Curating content around you interests to build community.

Week 6 – 10/3 & 10/5 – Picking a Domain Name, Getting a Web hosting Account, and Installing WordPress  ***Note – please wait to get started on this above. We will go through tutorials in class on 10/3 & 10/5.

Week 7 – 10/10 & 10/12 –  Basic Operations of your Site <– Explore this link. Each student will write a new blog post where they discover and share (hyperlinks) of a series of “newbie” wordpress tutorials on customizing a new WordPress website. (lots of content out there) What questions do you have about your new website? How will you go about resolving them and finding resources? Put it all in a new blog on YOUR website.

Week 8 – 10/17 & 10/19 – First, Lets first do a Check in! Log in your first blog post in from YOUR new Website. Conversations about copyright. Read this post and find an article or post about a copyright issue of interest to you. Describe your understanding of the law and the case presented. And document this in a blog post. Have Fun!

Week 9 – 10/24 & 10/26 – First, Lets first do a Check in!

Week 10 – 10/31 & 11/2 – Professor. Smith extended my Net Art Tutorial from last week with this cool video tutorial which shows the use of to.be ( Newhive easily works for this too ) as well as a new way to make selections in Photoshop using a color range. He worked with a NYPL archive image of the Unisphere and made a couple of pieces. Continue reading

Week 12 – 11/14 & 11/16 – Lets get creative! Perhaps you will consider using an artifact from an archive and using it for a bit of remix! There’s a great DS106 assignment from a few years back that is still popular which asks you to rework the message of a propaganda poster into one for this class. Consider any of the techniques and tools previously used in class to make something from the archives.

Lets host an online student exhibition of the Vapor Wave works created! Convert your Vapor Wave piece into a .gif and e-mail it to me if you wish to be included in the online blog post exhibition – send to – ryan (at) ryanseslow.com

Week 13 –  NO CLASSES – Happy Thanksgiving! – (Remember, On Tuesday 11/21 you will follow a Friday class schedule.)

36 out of 40 registered CT101 students participated. (You still can if you need to!) Now its time to explore and share our experiences visiting some of those websites. Navigate to this Blog Post and jump in now!

PS- Have pending questions or need technical help? You have a network of help in our classroom! Lets work on it in class this week, we are getting closer to our final website presentation week!

Week 15 – 12/5 & 12/7 – Full class work session. This is the time to begin preparing for your final website presentations and final assessment blog post!  We will go over the details this week in class. I will posting a full information blog post about the requirements both here on the calendar and on the CT101 home page. Stay tuned! (12/7 is the last class session for the Thursday section of the course)

CT101 Final Class Presentations & Final Blog Post Information.

Please read all of the information below carefully. E-mail me with any questions at Ryan (at) ryanseslow.com or rseslow (at)york.cuny.edu

  1. **Final Website Presentations : Each student will be presenting their completed website to the class on the date listed below. Students will give a short guided tour and share successes, frustrations and an over all assessment of our course. Each student will have between 5-6 minutes to do this.

*The Tuesday section class of CT101 will give their final website presentations on TUESDAY 12/19 from 10AM -12PM

The Thursday section of class of CT101 will give their final website presentations on THURSDAY 12/14 from 10AM -12PM

2.***Final Blog Post Submission Each student will publish a Final Class Assessment blog post to their own website. You will E-Mail the link of this blog post to me ( ryan (at) ryanseslow.com or rseslow (at) york.cuny.edu ) no later than Tuesday 12/19 at Midnight.

The final blog post should be a detailed re-cap of what you have learned in CT101, what you enjoyed about our class and how you will apply your new skills into the world. Will you maintain and keep up your website? If so, how? If not, Why not? Your post should include a culmination of images, videos, GIFs, hyperlinks and writing. Please let this post display the best of your skills sets learned and applied!
