Something that really stood out to me from this film was Swartz’s way of thinking. He viewed things very differently, and at a very young age too. According to the movie he was always questioning why things were the way they were. There was one point in the film when someone was explaining that Aaron didn’t like school, I found it interesting that his dislike for school was fueled by the idea that he felt that learning could be done on your own, and that you didn’t need to go to school to gain knowledge. This way of thinking is unique as most kids dislike school because they dislike learning, but Aaron disliked it because he felt that they were teaching things that he could teach himself. I never thought about school this way so it was eye opening to realize that if you have the right motivation and tools you can learn things on your own. I think that this way of thinking was what lead Swartz to constantly look for ways to improve the web he was always searching for a way to be better, and solve new problems.
After browsing the given websites, I came across various assignments that I would love to try, not only because they seem fun, but also because participating in these projects, would allow me to further and expand my existing skills. The first assignment the caught my attention was Assignment 1. This project allows you to recreate a book cover from your favorite story. It appeals to me because not only would I have full creative freedom in this project, but I would be pushed to learn various new skills in order to successfully complete it. Learning new skills in programs such as photoshop, would be beneficial to me because it relates to my major and it is of personal interest. The second assignment that I would like to take on would be learning how to create a gif. Being an active member of Tumblr, I see an array of gifs on my dashboard on a daily basis. Recently, I’ve been very curious about them and I think that it would be beneficial to learn how to make them as a means of online expression. A project should be done at least once a week for this semester, and I know some people may think that is a lot, but the outcome would be extremely rewarding. I think that projects should be done frequently so that we are constantly learning and applying our new found skills. Personally, I’m very excited about this class because not only will we learn create and communicate efficently through a digital identity, but we will also learn an abundance of new skills.
“…the world of technology opens another medium for us to interact.”
This quote stood out to me because many people have become so used to the traditional way of communication that they fail to acknowledge wide range of opportunities that technology brings. Through technology we are able not only to communicate through words, but also through pictures, and through various types social media. We are given an opportunity to reinvent ourselves in an online community, without the fear of being judged for our innermost thoughts and beliefs.
