I’m still a bit confused as to how to work Photoshop, and especially because I’m working with a Mac. I’m not used to the hotkeys and how to right click and the mouse is really annoying since I’ve been using PCs my entire life.
I was only able to complete my static image last class, and I decided to use a portrait of Al Swearengen from the TV show Deadwood:
Deadwood, for those of you that don’t know, is a TV series that ran for 3 seasons from 2004 to 2006. It’s a western that takes place in the 1800s, and I only heard about it recently. I started watching it and I became hooked. And this is coming from a guy who can’t stand westerns.
The acting is dope, but what really stands out is the dialogue. They talk like how you would imagine they do back then, but there’s a lot of modern day curse words wove into it (because these are gritty, lawless people) so you’re also entertained by what they’re saying. It’s also written in a way that you can still understand pretty much everything they’re saying, even though the vocabulary is from a different time. I read some critic describe the dialogue as “Shakespearean with a lot of fucks” which is the perfect term for it.
This guy, Al Swearengen, is the best thing about the show. He’s played by British actor Ian McShane, who was also in Game of Thrones, John Wick, and Hot Rod to name a few. His American accent is so good, however, you won’t be able to tell he’s played by a British man.
He can best be described as the villain on the show, sometimes with heroic tendencies. He’s mostly the bad guy though, but he’s immensely charismatic and cunning. You can’t help but like him. He constantly steals the scene whenever he’s in it (thankfully the show pretty much revolves around him so he’s in a lot), which is a testament to just how good Ian McShane is.
Anyway, I just chose the portrait of him because I’m really into the show right now and this is what I managed to do:
Not much, but that’s also because this is the extent of my Photoshop abilities. I’m excited to learn more.
Watch Deadwood. It is a travesty that it was cancelled so early, but it’s one of the best TV shows I’ve ever watched. It may not be for everyone (it is kinda slow at times) but you should give it a try.
