We build, we make, for what?

As we come to the end of the semester I like to ask you to consider the kinds of work you’ve been doing and how you think it matters in the context of your goals to become a content producer. The Communications Technology major is structured to prepare students to work with a variety media and technologies to create many, many different forms of content. You could look to the core concentrations of television and web and think about how we prepare you to contribute to these specific industries.

We also ask you to think about your place in the context of internet/network culture and how so many people are now content creators. If content creation is part of the mana of the web, then you should see yourself as a wizard then is generating tons of mana for the network.

A big part of CT 101 is building your skills and comfort level to participate in this process of making and instantly publishing online. Each little GIF, remix, and/or blog post you put out there isn’t necessarily a contribution that has huge impact on the network, but it is now up there and you put it there. And since a lot of the work you’re creating is hosted on a space that you control (your website and Reclaim Hosting account) you can also take it down, un-publish it.

I’d like you to read this post I wrote which was a summary of a conversation with CT majors in their Junior and Senior years at York. It’s meant to be advice to you all just getting started in the major. After reading the post, think about writing a response on your own site. Try to describe which pieces of advice you think are most relevant to your goals. Give some though to the ‘Creative habits of making.’ Which ones do you think you already do? Why or why not? Did you think they were important habits? Why or why not?
