All Falls Down is one of my favorite songs from Kanye West and I decided to do a lyrically analysis on the song. I feel like so many people listen to songs but don’t really understand the lyrics.
Man I promise, she’s so self-conscious
She has no idea what she’s doing in college
That major that she majored in don’t make no money
But she won’t drop out, her parents will look at her funny
Now, tell me that ain’t insecurr
The concept of school seems so secure
Sophomore, three yurrs, ain’t picked a carurr
She like, fuck it, I’ll just stay down here and do hair
Cause that’s enough money to buy her a few pairs of new Airs
Cause her baby-daddy don’t really care
She’s so precious with the peer pressure
Couldn’t afford a car so she named her daughter Alexis
She had hair so long that it looked like weave
Then she cut it all off, now she look like Eve
And she be dealin’ with some issues that you can’t believe
Single black female addicted to retail, and well
1) This part is talking about a girl that is in college only because it’s what makes her parents happy, but she herself doesn’t have a clue as to why she is there.
2) They make the idea of going to college seem like such a “sure thing” when it comes to getting a job afterward but we all know that dream job isn’t guaranteed. She has been a college sophomore for 3 years (which is longer than the standard amount of time) and she hasn’t even figured out what she wants to do with her life. At this point she’s basically making the decision to just become a hairdresser being that can will give her enough money to buy sneakers, and the father of her child doesn’t care that she is spending money on sneakers and not the baby.
3) Being that she doesn’t have enough money for a car she named her daughter Alexis, this is a play on words. Here Alexis is referring to both the daughter’s name and the luxury car. (Alexis = a Lexus). Her hair was so long that it looked fake so she cut it off into a short haircut. (Eve is a rapper from the 90s that used to wear short haircuts). She’s dealing with so much stuff and shopping seems to be the “cure”.
