Straker Favorites: Def Jam Fight for New York

This is my favorite game. I’m a huge wrestling fan and I used to play a game called Wrestlemania 2000 for hours when I was younger. So then EA BIG, which was a subsection of EA that made exaggerated version of sports games, came along and applied their craft to wrestling. So then they came out with Def Jam Vendetta which was a super version of Wrestlemania 2000. If that wasn’t good enough, it had a hip-hop coating. So for the sequel they decided they needed to take things in a darker direction. Because who really wants to see underground street fighting with pinfalls? Out came Fight for New York which took the action out the ring and into various venues like bars and scrapyards. The fight also involved weapons like glass bottles and pipes. Also, the audience would get involved. Then the fighting itself got revamped. They introduced the 5 styles and their permutations which served to make striking just as useful as grappling. Then they also redid the life bar system so matches went by faster. But they kept the staple of the game, the Blazins.

Wrestling, fighting, hip-hop, a good story, celebrity appearances, customization characters, and more. This isn’t just a Straker favorite, it’s the Straker Favorite.

*SPOILERS*

Video games provide us with a lot of great stories and a lot of great characters. Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2 is one of these characters. In the Borderlands world everyone has an ECHO device which is basically like having a walkie talkie with your own frequency that anyone can get on to say something to you. Jack does not hesitate to use this at all as he trash talks, insults, berates, and annoys the player throughout the game. He seems to take a moment from his spare time just to deliver monologues like this. Under the twisted humor he provides lies a very dark and twisted person. He has basically forced the world into a dictatorship under his control and convinced himself he is saving it. He also enslaves his own daughter and uses her powerful abilities to help himself do this. In the city where he is most powerful he has propaganda spewing from speakers 24/7 that paint him as the ultimate hero and taking the credit of the protagonists from the first Borderlands. He also has the decapitated corpse of Bloodwing, a bird he stole from Mordecai and mutant, laying around in the middle of the city. Jack is sadistic and insane but manages to be hilarious at the same time. Jack is a fascinating character and him abusing the direct communication line he has to the player is the icing on the cake.
