Social networking has been and is currently becoming more of an essential and influential factor in our everyday lives. It impacts our both our personal and professional life as we go about our activities on a daily basis. Media on the whole infiltrates almost every aspect of our lives. Today almost everyone uses social media one way or the other.

Electronic gadgets have been obsessed with and have had a great demand globally.               Social Media allows us communicate and share information, it allows information to be recreated and be placed out there for future references, and it is also used as a learning and educating process in the development of young children.

With the use of social media information is therefore shared with millions of people creating a better informed society. Since media is not disposable, newspapers, TV news episodes and other forms of media can be stored and be easily retrieved at any time for individuals’ use. “Values of making connections with people” is one point which is amplified through social media. It can be used to make important ties and connections with people whom you may have a similar interest with and it can be very prominent in professional recommendations from others.

“Building bridges with a blog are ways to communicate”.Blogs can be very useful and valuable when communicating with people whom we’ve known and those now acquainted with. The term social is more as to how we communicate with people. Media on the other hand as the mode that is used to transmit communication.

Therefore social media can be viewed as a mode or mechanism used to convey communication. However, social media also has its setbacks. Personal and private information can cause corruption in a person’s professional and personal life, since many employers use an individual’s social media/blogs information to determine whether someone may or may not be eligible for a job.

The information put out there has varying consequences as of how people monitor your life on social media. I personally found the workshop to be functional to my own use of social media and it was quite educating for me to learn more about how it can be useful and how it can be harmful. Social media has its pros and cons and should be used in the right ways for the right reasons.

What Public Archiving Habits Might You Develop?

I haven’t exactly tried much public archiving, I would say I am quite an old school person who tends to stick with thumb drives to store information. I haven’t exactly tried much public archiving, I would say I am quite an old school person who tends to stick with thumb drives to store information. I know it seems like quite an ancient mechanism to when it comes to storing information and archiving, however, like mentioned earlier, I tend to be quite old school at times, or for the most part let’s just say all the time.

Nonetheless, I am very inquisitive as to what it would be like to try a public archiving system such or a social bookmarking tools like Diigo.com or Delicious.com. My main concern though is whether people would be able to access my information and use it without my permission. Even though I would like to try a public archiving system, I guess I still have a few unclear perceptions about it.

If I consider taking a personal collection and putting it up online as a public archive, it might actually have quite a few pros to it. Also I do not use Flickr photo album and I do not have a Tumblr. However, I’ve posted a few videos on Youtube which I believe is like a public archive.

Youtube has allowed me to publish work that I’ve done and people have a chance to view my work and make comments and critiques.                                                                                           I am mostly grateful for Youtube since I have the opportunity to publish my work on a free site and have as many views as possible.

Can Personal Collections Become Public Archives?

I read the “Personal Collections Become Public Archives” and it was quite realistic and something that some people can relate to, and of course that depends on your age or which era you are from. I read the “Personal Collections Become Public Archives” and it was quite realistic and something that some people can relate to, and of course that depends on your age or which era you are from. Earlier in the 90’s I personally was one of those persons who would get up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons since if you missed at that on that date and time then your chances of seeing it again is almost NIL or perhaps in another couple of months.

As mentioned in the piece, in the 70’s and in the 80’s Youtube was not available for you to catch up with the cartoons that you missed this morning. Also, with Netflix available people no longer have to stay awake until wee hours in the night or get up early in the mornings to keep up with their shows.

As the writer in “Personal Collections Become Public Archives” said, in the 70’s and 80’s you were lucky if you had a tape collector where you can have hours and hours of your shows recorded if you were so fortunate. From the artifact that was given I thought Battle of the Planets was the most fun and endearing one.

Digital Journalism- Excerpts from the Columbia Graduate School

As I was reading about Digital Journalism: Excerpts from the Columbia Graduate School: “The Story So Far, What We Know About the Business of Digital Journalism” I figured it was very interesting and educating at the same time. As I was reading about Digital Journalism: Excerpts from the Columbia Graduate School: The Story So Far, What We Know About the Business of Digital Journalism I figured it was very interesting and educating at the same time. Digital journalism also known as online journalism is a contemporary form of journalism where editorial content is distributed via the Internet as opposed to publishing via print or broadcast.

News from Everywhere: Chapter one, which is ‘The Economics of Digital Journalism’, focuses a great deal on how the digital world contributes a great deal to the nation’s economy. Rick Edmonds who studies the financial side of the new business for Poynter’s Website claimed that newspapers’ online revenue grew by more than 30 percent in both 2005 and 2006.

I personally think that the digital transformation of the news industry has grown tremendously over the years. Newsrooms and newspapers have swelled in size over the years, and digital medium has taken a permanent place in the media industry.

With audiences and ad revenue growing even as competitors disappeared, digital journalism is growing constantly. The best part about digital journalism is that there are fewer barriers to entry, lowered distribution costs, and diverse computer networking technologies have led to the widespread practice of digital journalism.

After listening to a BBC podcast about producing news reports using mobile phones it gave me a lot of perspectives about how media is taking a whole new approach with just the use of a smart phone. For instance the BBC started issuing IPhones to its journalists for news gathering which seems like an immense step for a news organization such as the BBC to be gathering news through a phone. Smartphones offer a simple and flexible way to record and edit broadcast-quality audio.

BBC Photo

The BBC reported that there are some basic rules to making the most of the apps most smartphones are supplied with – like remembering to divert calls before starting to record and avoiding talking directly into the microphone as this will distort the sound. BBC journalists are recording and editing packages for radio and TV and broadcasting live from location.

BBC’s tutorial was quite standard and clear about how they use an IPhone to do news gathering and they are able to do their editing on it as well.

The recording features on the IPhone allow you to trim your audio and email it as well. It is quite interesting as to how much you can get accomplished with an IPhone, where for instance the BBC journalists are able to do their reporting and gather their news and simply email it to their newsroom. Also the PNG news app that they have makes the whole process quite simple for reporters to do their job and to get a lot done. A smartphone is an amazing news gathering device to have and the best part is that you can fit it in your pocket.
